Board of Directors Hold Fiscal and Academic Year-End Meeting

On May 17, prior to this year’s graduation ceremony, the board of directors met in the St. Nersess Library for their fiscal and academic year-end meeting. The meeting was presided over by both Bishop Mesrop Parsamyan, Primate of the Eastern Diocese and President of the St. Nersess Board of Directors, and Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese and Vice President of the Board of Directors.

In his report, Fr. Mardiros Chevian, dean, announced that there is a new applicant born in Armenia but who studied in Jerusalem and would be continuing his studies at St. Nersess as a student of the Eastern Diocese. He mentioned the three Clergy Continuing Education courses that were held during the academic year – Liturgical Books and Resources of the Armenian Church; Aging, Ministry and Meaning; and Marriage Counseling Certification – as well as a new one that will take place this Fall on Ministry to the Grieving. There were also three courses offered to the public. Click here to watch the archived lectures.

He reviewed the upcoming youth summer programs, which will include the Deacons’ Training Program, High School Summer Conference, and Youth Choir Workshop (fully funded by the Yn. Diane Chevian Memorial Fund). This summer, all the sessions are filled to capacity! The High School Summer Conference will have three upper class students from the Sts. Tarkmanchatz School of Jerusalem and 10 students from the Western Diocese who have been offered scholarships to attend from St. Gregory Armenian Church in Pasadena, CA. There will also be a student attending both the Deacons’ Training Program and High School session from Brazil.

Der Mardiros also mentioned all the parish visits with seminarians in the Eastern Diocese, including the Palm Sunday weekend trip to St. John Armenian Church in Southfield, MI, and the programming he led or facilitated in the Western Diocese during the past academic year.

The seminary offered weekly broadcasts by Zoom of our morning service on Fridays at 8:00 am, which will resume in the Fall. Also coming this Fall will be the first Preaching Initiative Workshop for clergy of the Eastern Diocese and Western Diocese, underwritten by the Lilly Endowment grant the seminary received last Fall.

Following the dean’s report, Dn. Garen Hamamjian, who graduated that evening, shared his thoughts about his time at the seminary and his hopes and dreams for the future. The board then reviewed the seminary finances for the fiscal year ending May 31 presented by board treasurer, Richard Papalian, and passed the budget.

Marketing & Development Director, Donna Sirounian, briefly updated everyone on the latest fundraising, development and marketing initiatives and analytics. There were also discussions surrounding strategic development plans, including an upcoming Fundraising Banquet in Los Angeles on November 17, 2024, with the blessing of the Archbishop Hovnan Derderian. The event will be chaired by board members Margaret Mgrublian and Fr. Sarkis Petoyan, with funds raised benefiting the seminary.

Board elections were held, and we congratulate the following new members: Fr. Vart Gyozalyan, Dn. Ara Jeknavorian, and Mr. Michael Kasparian. The Board will meet again in the Fall.
